It has finally happened, one of the damned letters has fallen off my front plate, and the adhesive is peeling around the rest of the letters. They couldn’t withstand going through the car wash last night, now I have to pay the government to replace plates which were defective lest I get fined for having an illegible plate which was never my fault to begin with.

For those who are not from Ontario, this is how the shit plates end up looking (not my plate, just an image from Google):

I’ve never seen this before on plates other than Ontario, although after some reading it looks like it has occurred in other provinces and some states. Nova Scotia got all theirs redone for no charge. Knowing Ontario, they’ll probably expect me to pay for a new plate sticker to go along with the new plates.

When they all fall off, stick them back on in a random order, or make them say something interesting.

you can claim a defective plate and they might replace it for free. they did with my bike plate.

That doesn’t happen here in Quebec, most likely cause we have no front plates

Bloody hell. That’s some really crap quality work right there.

Ours are visually bland but still legible and less prone to fatigue.

Rear plate is doing better, but still visibly bubbling. Only a matter of time before they fall off like they did on my front plate.

I checked, and it needs to be within 5 years. These plates were originally registered on my parents’ car back in 2008 or 2009.

If your license plate starts with a B like the one above you can likely get new ones for free. There was/is a recall of sorts on a large number of earlier B-plates, as they’re called, because their paint was found to be defective. My brothers got a new set for the family’s Mazda3 last year through that program. Check with the MTO, the affected range of plates is likely listed on their site.

Wait... What... How are they damn stickers instead of painted on? They look like they are made out of cardboard... I mean our plates are boring pieces of metal painted white and black but they usually last the lifetime of the car.

It looked like stone chips

I’ll look into it further - everything I’ve read so far suggests that I need to pay if they’re not replaced within 5 years.

Those don’t help, but given how my rear plate looks it’s not just stone chips that are causing these plates to peel.

That’s what I thought they were, too. Apparently it’s layers of different wraps like adhesives, reflective layers, etc. and some parts peel, but more worn out parts just flake off.

Should be a free replacement. But then Wynne screws everything up. I saw one the other day where 70% of it was hanging of and flapping in the breeze. And it was a rear.
